Chantix helps people quit smoking, but the drug has been linked to suicidal thoughts.

Nicotine is one of the most powerful addictions. Cessation from the drug takes extreme willpower and dedication. Most addicts are unable to quit smoking alone. Chantix is a drug that helps people quit smoking without patches and gum substitutes. The drug works by limiting the pleasurable effects of smoking. When smokers use cigarettes while using Chantix, they get little to no high from the nicotine, so the cravings are inhibited.

Patients Who Quit Smoking with Chantix also Report Suicidal Thoughts

In July of 2009, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) reported warnings for patients using Chantix. The drug is now required to carry a warning that it may cause suicidal thoughts. These thoughts have an unknown origin, but it’s important for people who have a predisposition for the condition.

The FDA adds that many of the reports from patients are from people who do not quit smoking while using the drug. Chantix is a drug used to quit smoking, but using the drug while continuing tobacco use is dangerous for people’s health and mental state. The side effects are so severe that the FAA has banned pilots from using the drug while on duty.

The FDA’s study of Chantix called for research into Zyban, which is also a drug used to quit smoking. Zyban’s active ingredient is bupropion, which is the active ingredient of Wellbutrin. Wellbutrin is an antidepressant with a warning label for possible suicidal tendencies.

The Advantages of Chantix

While the black box warning is now required on Chantix for people who want to quit smoking, the advantages are still beneficial for people who need help. Nicotine is infamous for its addiction. Tobacco is legal, but its side effects have several side effects including lung cancer and emphysema. Most patients relapse at least once when attempting to quit smoking.

Several medications are available for patients to help them quit smoking. Aside from mental therapy, patients also have the choice of gum, patches, and drugs. Chantix is a drug taken to destroy the pleasure when smoking. The patient receives no positive feedback from receptors in the brain while smoking and taking Chantix. The limitation of pleasure sensors helps people quit smoking without the cravings.

Even with the warning label, people continue to quit smoking. The depression side effects should be closely monitored especially in patients who have a predisposition for suicidal thoughts. Using drugs like Chantix is a decision that should be discussed with a doctor. Even without the drug, cigarette usage should be minimized for better health.
